French Immersion
Bilingualism is an asset in both academic and personal pursuits as it opens students' minds to other languages, cultures, and avenues to success. French Immersion students entering Grade 9 will attend Canmore Collegiate High School in Canmore.
Students will spend 20 percent of instructional time learning in French. Courses offered in French may include French Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, and Science. Students also may have the opportunity to participate in exchanges and field trips to help them gain the confidence required to use Canada's official second language.
In Grade 10, students who have completed the French Immersion Program can write a DELF Diploma exam to officially recognize their level of proficiency in French. The DELF is an official diploma awarded by the Ministry of Education in France, which certifies a level of proficiency in all four French skills. Students also may choose to enrol in French 20, 30, or Advanced Placement French Language and Culture, which emphasizes communication by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentation skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness.
